JUPITER AND JUNO

The panel with Jupiter and Juno is taken from the Iliad (Book XIV, 314-316 and 328) and depicts the moment in which Juno tries to distract Jupiter, by seducing him, from the fate of the Trojan War:while Juno, in fact, sides with the Greeks, the king of the gods does not want any deity to intervene to favor one or the other faction. In order to succeed in this undertaking, Juno took possession, through deception, of Venus' magic girdle (in the fresco she encircles it just under her breast), a garment capable of providing the wearer with a seductive force that no one can resist. The goddess's plan is completely successful and we can see with how much passion and voluptuousness Jupiter embraces Juno, beautiful and sensual, to make love to her. The scene celebrates the seductive capacity of feminine beauty, but also the legitimate pleasure of eros in a couple, such as Jupiter and Juno, united in legitimate marriage.
