AURORA AND CEPHALUS
The scene, taken from Ovid (Metamorphoses, Book VII, 700-708), depicts Aurora kidnapping the mortal Cephalus, with whom she had fallen in love, and taking him away in her chariot. However, he loves Procris and tries to escape the goddess' embrace. Lying on the ground, bottom right, is the now decrepit Tithonus, Aurora's first human lover. For love of him, Aurora had asked the gods that Tithonus would never die. The invocation had been answered but, since Aurora had not specified this aspect, Tithone, despite having become immortal, did not stop aging. Aurora, therefore, no longer satisfied with such an old companion, turns her attention to the young Cephalus. The scene alludes to how, as time passes, feelings of love can change. A concept also sealed by the roses, the deciduous flower par excellence, carried by the cupid who hovers above the chariot.
